Motorists travelling along the M7 motorway this week have been met with an unusual sight, not just slow-moving convoys of tractors and trucks, but now a portable toilet being delivered directly to the protest route, a signal that demonstrators are preparing to stay.
The ongoing fuel protests, sparked by rising petrol and diesel costs, have already caused widespread disruption across Ireland, with convoys assembling at key junctions and deliberately slowing traffic on major routes including the M7.
But in a moment that has quickly captured attention online, footage circulating on social media shows a portaloo being transported onto the motorway.
Organisers and participants have been vocal about their intent to prolong the demonstrations, with some indicating they are prepared to remain on the roads for extended periods. Across the country, similar scenes have unfolded, with vehicles lining routes, blocking access points, and converging in Dublin, contributing to significant delays and gridlock. Currently, Dublin City Centre is completely blocked, with diversions in place for public transport.
The protests form part of a wider national response to rising fuel prices, with demonstrators arguing that increasing costs are placing unsustainable pressure on workers, transport operators and rural communities. Convoys along the M7 and other major arteries have been central to the movement, creating rolling slowdowns designed to draw attention to the issue.
For travellers, the impact has been immediate. Journey times have stretched, diversions have become commonplace, and authorities have warned of continued disruption as protests evolve.
