If you, like me, have devoured this series, chances are you’ll want to immerse yourself in its world when visiting Scotland. On the occasion of the release of the latest season of Outlander on March 7, 2026 (yes, it’s almost the end…), follow in the footsteps of Claire and Jamie through the most beautiful settings of the show!
I’ll start with probably one of my FAVORITE locations, and also the most famous in the series: Lallybroch! These scenes were filmed at the 15th-century Midhope Castle, perfectly capturing the atmosphere of the series. The interior isn’t open to visitors, but the exterior is enough to relive those iconic moments (you know which ones I mean…). The site is so popular that it has become ticketed… but that won’t stop us from hoping to spot Jamie, right? A must-visit location full of emotion, surrounded by Scotland’s stunning landscapes.
Additionally, if you want to extend your Lallybroch experience, cottages will be available from spring 2026, and you can enjoy a special discount by joining the waiting list!

Castle Leoch of the MacKenzie clan actually exists! The scenes were filmed at Doune Castle, and you can visit it! (Yay!)
Its massive walls, large courtyard, and medieval rooms instantly transport you into the series’ world. This location appears frequently, especially in season 1 when Claire is “the MacKenzies’ guest” upon arriving in 17th-century Scotland.
Another reason you need to go there: the audio guide commentary was recorded by Sam Heughan (Jamie) himself! (Personally, that’s reason enough for me to visit.)

Do you remember this wonderful castle?
It’s the Duke of Sandringham’s estate, seen several times between seasons 1 and 3, most notably in that duel scene between the Duke and the MacDonalds, where Jamie gets hurt! (Hands off Jamie!)
This fabulous location is real, it was filmed at Hopetoun House, near South Queensferry.
You can visit this magnificent 18th century castle and its grounds, surrounded by several trails, between April and September, perfect for a stroll and spotting local wildlife.
Plus, enjoy plenty of activities, including geocaching, orienteering, and educational workshops for children. Everything you need for a perfect family day while immersing yourself even more in the history and world of Outlander.

A castle you won’t easily forget, thanks to the very striking courtyard scene in season 1, where Jamie receives a hundred lashes from Captain Randall (I’m still traumatized). Nevertheless, this castle is impossible to miss its distinctive architecture, reminiscent of a ship’s hull, and its mysterious atmosphere give it a captivating charm.

Another jewel of Scotland’s heritage is the famous Linlithgow Palace, which in the series serves as Wentworth Prison (yes, you know exactly which scene I mean…). It’s here that Jamie suffers Randall’s abuse at the end of season 1… If we set aside that dreadful episode, I assure you this castle is well worth a visit! Although the site is now in ruins, it remains a place steeped in Scottish history it is notably where Mary, Queen of Scots, was born. This castle is a must-see if you’re staying here, attracting many visitors beyond Outlander fans, of course.

For devoted fans of the series and lovers of Scotland, this is also the site of a major battle in the country’s history and an absolute must-see. The series scenes were not filmed there, of course, but at Cumbernauld Glen, between Glasgow and Falkirk. However, one scene was filmed on the battlefield itself, the moment when Claire visits the Fraser Clan memorial at the end of season 2 of Outlander. It’s a moment that encourages us to explore the historical past of Scotland and the Highlands.
You can visit this site steeped in history, as well as its museum, which retraces the events of the battle. When you go, you’ll be able to see the Fraser Clan memorial, which is often adorned with flowers left by fans of the series.

These filming locations offer much more than just a backdrop. They allow you to experience history at the heart of authentic landscapes. With the final season releasing on March 7, it’s the perfect time to set off and discover the Scottish lands.
And if you don’t want to handle the logistics of an Outlander road trip, guided tours are available with Highlander Tours or on GetYourGuide! Visit the series’ most iconic locations without worrying about a thing.
