A huge new Universal theme park is coming to Bedfordshire — and it could become one of the UK's biggest new attractions. The UK's theme park scene is about to get a major shake-up.
Universal is bringing its first major theme park and resort destination in the UK and Europe to Bedfordshire, with the newly named Universal United Kingdom Resort set to open in 2031.
Construction work is already underway at the site near Bedford, with Universal investing more than £5 billion in the resort during its expected five-year construction period. The UK Government is also investing £1.3 billion in supporting local and regional infrastructure.
And while Universal is keeping the finer details of the attractions under wraps for now, we already know enough to get very excited.

Where Will Universal United Kingdom Resort Be?
The new Universal theme park will be built at Kempston Hardwick in Bedfordshire, close to Bedford and around an hour from London by road. The site is being transformed from the former brickworks and adjoining land into a major entertainment resort. Planning permission for the development came into force in January 2026.
Getting there should also become easier as the project progresses, with planned improvements including an expanded Wixams railway station, new and improved road connections and direct slip roads from the A421.
That means the resort is being designed not simply as a theme park, but as a destination capable of welcoming visitors from across the UK and overseas.

What Will Universal United Kingdom Resort Include?
Universal is promising a world-class theme park featuring several themed lands, with immersive storytelling, major rides, innovative attractions and live entertainment.
Beyond the park itself, the resort will include:
A 500-room hotel
Retail
Restaurants and dining
Entertainment
Immersive themed environments
Thrill rides and attractions
Family-friendly experiences
Universal has not yet revealed the full line-up of themed lands or attractions, meaning there's still plenty to discover before the resort opens. And that might be part of the fun.
Universal's parks around the world are known for turning blockbuster entertainment into immersive worlds, so the question isn't simply which rides will arrive in Bedford — it's which fictional worlds will visitors actually be able to step inside?
When Will Universal UK Open?
The planned opening date for Universal United Kingdom Resort is 2031- that might sound like a long way away, but the scale of the project means there's plenty to happen before the first guests walk through the gates.
Construction is now moving ahead, following the formal agreement between Universal and the UK Government in June 2026. The project is expected to take around five years to construct, with Universal committing more than £5 billion during that period and a further £1 billion in capital investment during its first decade of operation.

How Big Will the New Universal Theme Park Be?
Universal United Kingdom Resort is being positioned as a major international destination, rather than simply another UK theme park.
The development is expected to attract around 8.5 million visitors in its first year, according to the UK Government, while the wider project is estimated to generate nearly £50 billion in economic benefit.
It is also expected to create around 28,000 jobs, including approximately 20,000 during construction and 8,000 once the resort is operational. For Bedfordshire, that makes the project about much more than rollercoasters. It could transform the area into one of Britain's major tourism destinations.
What Rides Will Be at Universal UK?
This is where things get interesting — and where it's worth separating official information from online speculation.
Universal has confirmed that the resort will feature themed lands, thrilling rides, innovative attractions and entertainment, but the individual rides and intellectual properties have not yet been officially revealed.
There are already plenty of rumours online about which Universal franchises could make their way to Bedford, but for now, visitors will have to wait for Universal to reveal exactly what is being built.
That means we're not going to pretend we know what's coming.
What we do know is that Universal Creative — the company's product design and development division — is responsible for bringing the resort to life, promising immersive storytelling and attractions designed specifically for the new destination.

More Than a Theme Park
One of the most exciting elements of Universal United Kingdom Resort is that it is being designed as a complete holiday destination. The 500-room hotel will allow visitors to stay on site, while restaurants, retail and entertainment will give guests reasons to spend more than a single day at the resort. That makes the project particularly interesting for families travelling from outside Bedfordshire — and potentially for international visitors combining Universal with a wider UK holiday.
A trip could eventually pair a few days exploring London with a stay at Universal United Kingdom Resort before heading elsewhere in England.
What Happens Next?
For now, Universal United Kingdom Resort is officially under construction, with further details expected to emerge as the project develops.
The biggest reveals still to come include the themed lands, rides, attractions, restaurants and entertainment experiences that will eventually fill the resort.
So while we may have to wait until 2031 to experience the finished destination, Bedfordshire is already becoming the UK's newest theme park hotspot.
And if Universal delivers on its promise, the biggest question won't be whether you should visit — but how long you'll need to stay.
