The Spike Island Fireworks Festival returns this year to light up the skies of Cork Harbour! On Saturday 18 July 2026, celebrate the island’s national day, marking the moment when Great Britain handed Spike Island back to Ireland in 1938. An event combining history, music, performances and much more, all set in an exceptional location.

An evening full of history
Spike Island is known for its impressive fortress and fascinating past, often compared to the famous island of Alcatraz. Nicknamed “Ireland’s Hell”, the island held more than 2,300 prisoners during the 19th century, making it the largest prison complex in the world at the time. This event offers the opportunity to discover the island’s incredible history while enjoying live entertainment, panoramic ocean views and historic buildings. A perfect evening to share with family, friends or as a couple in a truly unique setting.
Programme
The Spike Island Fireworks is much more than a traditional fireworks display. Enjoy a wide range of activities organised for the whole family in a festive and welcoming atmosphere:
live music
circus performances
family-friendly activities
the spectacular fireworks show
Food and drink stalls will also be available throughout the evening so you can fully enjoy the event without worrying about anything else.
The island is accessible by ferry, with departures starting from 5pm, giving visitors plenty of time to explore the island before the show. The fireworks display will begin at 10:45pm after sunset, bringing the evening to a magical close.
