Combining travel and wellness has long been a trend, and in 2025, urban wellness surged in popularity. In 2026, the spotlight turns to elemental wellness travel, a practice centred on intentional exposure to heat, cold, water, steam and fresh air to harness their natural benefits.

Few destinations embody this evolution as effortlessly as Zurich. With a bathing culture which dates back to the Roman era, the city has wellness woven into its fabric. From the many open-air pools in and around Lake Zurich to contemporary spa rituals, saunas and restorative treatments, Zurich offers a rare balance combining the vibrancy of an urban city break with a regenerative wellness experience.

Outdoor bathing

Dive into “Badi” season

Bathing culture in Zurich is hugely popular during the spring and summer seasons, with an array of open-air public baths near and around Lake Zurich. These typically open their doors in May and stay open well into September. Affectionately known as a ‘Badi’, Zurich has 24 public baths. The lakeside Strandband Mythenquai is a great option, providing long sandy beach and a large grassy area for sunbathing aswell as diving platforms of three different heights and Stand up paddle boat rentals. Strandband Tiefenbrunnen is located on the right shore of Lake Zurich and is suitable for young families with a children’s paddling pool and a non-swimmer’s zone.  Bathing isn’t limited to Lake Zurich, the River Limmat also offers something for everyone in the heart of the city. Obere Letten and Unterer Letten are both free options, with Unterer Letten the city’s oldest riverside bathing facility, while Obere Letten features a long swimming channel, diving boards, and volleyball courts.

Entry to pools around Lake Zurich starts at £8 per session for adults and visitors can pay on arrival.

Experience off season cold plunges

While outdoor bathing in Zurich mainly spans the late spring and summer months, there are select pools and lidos open during the cooler months (from October to April) for those looking to get their dose of water wellness outside of the season. With sweeping views across Lake Zurich and the alps, Seebad Enge is a scenic spot for a refreshing dip, with enclosed lanes in the lake for swimming as well as a sauna to warm up. Seebad Utoquai also offers bracing winter swims, along with structured, professionally led introductions to cold-water swimming, guiding newcomers on how to take the plunge safely, from £35 per session.

Entry starts at £8 per session for adults and visitors can pay on arrival.

Saunas
