  • Samkani Camp is set to be one of the Best New Hotels for 2027

A&K Sanctuary's Samkani Camp is opening in late 2027 and gives you the rare oppurtunity to stay on the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, on the salt itself rather than at its edge. It is built entirely from Airstreams: five architect-designed suites, plus a sixth at the centre holding the dining room, the lounge and a bar. Outside, the polished metal picks up the white of the salt and the blue of the sky. Inside, the suites are finished in blue Bolivian marble and chrome. Each one runs self-sufficiently. The salt flat covers more than ten thousand, five hundred square kilometres and holds no shade, no landmarks and almost no sound. The nearest people are usually twenty to thirty kilometres away. What the place does with weather is the reason people come. From December to April the rains lay a film of water across the salt and the whole plain turns into a mirror, so precise that the horizon disappears and you walk on cloud. In the dry months the surface cracks into hexagons that run to the edge of sight. At night there is no light for hundreds of kilometres. The sky fills with more stars than most people have ever seen. A private guide and driver come with every stay. More than thirty excursions lead across the flats to hidden islands and volcanic caves, several of them arranged for these guests alone. A&K Sanctuary is the lodge, camp and riverboat collection of Abercrombie & Kent, the company Geoffrey Kent founded in Kenya in 1962 and which has spent sixty years learning how to put comfortable rooms in places that resist them. The design here draws directly on the low-impact mobile camps A&K developed across Africa, adapted for one of the most exposed environments in South America, where there is nothing to shelter behind. The suite interiors will feature Bolivian blue marble and chrome details, while the dining area includes a bar. From the exterior to the inside, the project offers a much more refined take on “living in a trailer.” But the most exciting part is still imagining how much time you can spend just staring out the window after waking up each day. Running it is a Bolivian team with decades of experience on the altiplano, which matters more than it sounds in a landscape that gives up nothing to a visitor without a guide. Few places let guests sleep out on the salar itself. This will be one of them. • A Digital Detox in... Nigeria?

When was the last time you went an entire day without checking your phone? No emails, no Instagram, no endless scrolling through TikTok – just you, your surroundings and a little peace and quiet. For many travellers, the idea of switching off completely is becoming increasingly appealing. From remote countryside retreats to peaceful beach escapes, digital detox holidays offer the chance to step away from screens and reconnect with the world around us. But where in the world is it easiest to unplug? A new study by Nova Kratom has ranked countries around the world according to their potential for a digital detox, and the results might surprise you. Taking the top spot is Nigeria, followed by Lebanon and Barbados, with Oman and Egypt completing the top five. Is it a sign of statistics not taking in the whole picture, or is this something to actually consider? The Top Five Countries for a Digital Detox According to the research, these countries offer some of the strongest conditions for disconnecting from the digital world, based on internet connectivity, mobile infrastructure and protected natural spaces. Rank Country Digital Detox Score 1 Nigeria 70.54/100 2 Lebanon 57.13/100 3 Barbados 56.35/100 4 Oman 54.71/100 5 Egypt 52.43/100 The study examined four factors: the number of mobile phone towers, the percentage of land under protection, average broadband speeds and the proportion of the population using the internet. Each country received a score across the four measures, which were then combined into an overall digital detox score out of 100. Nigeria Takes the Top Spot Nigeria has been named the world's leading country for a digital detox in the study, achieving a score of 70.54 out of 100. The West African nation was the only country to score above 70, placing it comfortably ahead of the rest of the ranking. One of the biggest factors behind Nigeria's position is its relatively low internet usage, with just 41.21% of the population using the internet according to the study's dataset. Average broadband speeds of 26.08 Mbps also contributed to its overall score. For travellers, Nigeria offers a wealth of cultural and natural experiences, from the bustling streets and creative energy of Lagos to its beaches, forests and national parks. Of course, visiting Nigeria doesn't automatically mean leaving your phone behind, but the research highlights how different levels of digital connectivity can influence opportunities to disconnect. Lebanon Comes in Second Lebanon takes second place with a digital detox score of 57.13 out of 100. The Middle Eastern country recorded the slowest average broadband speed in the top ten, at just 14.73 Mbps, which contributed significantly to its position. Beyond the statistics, Lebanon is known for its dramatic mountain landscapes, Mediterranean coastline, historic towns and extraordinary food culture. Its mountain villages and countryside offer a different atmosphere from the busy streets of Beirut, although travellers should always consult current official travel advice before planning a visit. Barbados Ranks Third for Switching Off Well, this feels a little more realistic! If your idea of a digital detox involves a beach, a good book and absolutely no reason to check your emails, Barbados might sound like the perfect destination. The Caribbean island ranks third in the study, scoring 56.35 out of 100. Barbados recorded 2,775 mobile phone towers, the smallest absolute number among the countries in the top ten. However, it also had the lowest percentage of protected land in the ranking, at just 1.10%. For holidaymakers, the island offers plenty of opportunities to put down the phone, from relaxing on its beautiful beaches to swimming in turquoise waters, exploring coastal villages and enjoying its laid-back Caribbean atmosphere. While Barbados is certainly not without modern connectivity, its natural beauty and slower holiday pace make it an appealing destination for travellers looking for a break from everyday routines. Oman Offers a Different Kind of Digital Detox Oman comes in fourth place with a score of 54.71 out of 100. Interestingly, the country has the highest percentage of internet users in the top ten, at 95.25%, proving that digital detox potential isn't necessarily about having limited access to technology. Instead, Oman performs particularly well for its protected natural landscapes, with 22% of its land under protection according to the research. For travellers, Oman offers some extraordinary opportunities to escape the noise of everyday life. Think vast desert landscapes, dramatic mountains, secluded beaches and peaceful nights beneath the stars. From exploring the dunes of the Wahiba Sands to discovering the country's beautiful wadis and mountain villages, Oman is a destination where the scenery alone might be enough to make you forget about your notifications. Egypt Completes the Top Five Rounding out the top five is Egypt, with a digital detox score of 52.43 out of 100. The study recorded 249,329 mobile phone towers across approximately 995,450 square kilometres, alongside 13.20% of land under protection. Egypt performed relatively consistently across the different measures, placing it fifth overall. While destinations such as Cairo and Sharm El Sheikh offer plenty of modern comforts and connectivity, Egypt is also home to vast desert landscapes, remote oases and peaceful stretches of coastline. For travellers looking to slow down, experiences such as sailing along the Nile, exploring the Western Desert or spending time beside the Red Sea can provide a welcome change of pace. Why Digital Detox Holidays Are About More Than Losing Wi-Fi One of the most interesting findings from the study is that countries don't necessarily need poor internet connectivity to offer opportunities for a digital detox. Germany and Indonesia also feature in the study's top ten, demonstrating how very different destinations can achieve strong results. Germany, for example, performs well because of its protected natural landscapes rather than a lack of digital infrastructure. A spokesperson for Nova Kratom explained that the results show there is more than one way to disconnect, with countries across different regions and income levels offering conditions that may encourage travellers to switch off. And that's perhaps the most important takeaway for anyone considering a digital detox holiday. You don't necessarily need to travel somewhere without Wi-Fi to enjoy a proper break from your phone. Sometimes it's simply about choosing a destination where there's enough to see, do and experience that checking your notifications becomes the last thing on your mind. Whether that's a remote desert camp in Oman, a beach escape in Barbados or a peaceful countryside retreat closer to home, the best digital detox might be the one where you decide to put your phone away in the first place.

With smaller groups and more immersive experiences, these trips are designed for travellers who want to get beneath the surface of a destination. 2. Contiki Originals: The Classic Contiki Experience Sometimes you can't beat a classic. Contiki Lite: Big Adventures on a Smaller Budget Here's some good news for anyone trying to travel without spending a fortune. Contiki Lite is designed for budget-conscious travellers who want to explore the world without paying for unnecessary extras. These more affordable, stripped-back trips focus on the essential travel experiences, making them particularly appealing to younger travellers, students and anyone looking to stretch their holiday budget a little further. 5. Contiki Outdoors: For Adventure Lovers If your ideal holiday involves hiking boots rather than sun loungers, Contiki Outdoors could be your perfect match. Designed for travellers who love getting active, these trips focus on outdoor adventures and exploring some of the world's most exciting natural landscapes. It's about experiencing a destination rather than simply looking at it, with activities and adventures taking centre stage. 6. Contiki Islands: Sun, Sea and Paradise Dreaming of turquoise waters, beautiful beaches and island sunsets? Contiki Islands brings together holidays in some of the world's most spectacular island destinations, including Greece, Indonesia and the Maldives. Whether you're looking to explore tropical islands, discover coastal cultures or spend some well-earned time beside the sea, this new collection is all about island life. 7. Contiki Festivals: Travel for the Music and Culture For travellers who love planning holidays around music festivals and cultural celebrations, Contiki Festivals introduces another way to see the world. Contiki Luxe: A Little More Luxury Who says group travel has to mean backpacking and budget accommodation? Contiki Luxe is designed for travellers who appreciate the finer things in life, introducing a collection of more luxurious holiday experiences. For those who want the social side of travelling with a group without compromising on comfort, this could be an appealing new option. Fiji and the Maldives Join Contiki's Destinations One of the biggest announcements from the GO WANDER launch is the introduction of Fiji and the Maldives as new Contiki destinations. Both are famous for their incredible natural beauty, beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters, but they've traditionally been associated with honeymooners and luxury holidays. Their addition to Contiki's portfolio opens up new opportunities for younger travellers interested in exploring these destinations as part of an organised group trip. The company is also expanding its itineraries in Japan and India, reflecting growing interest in Asian travel. According to Contiki, passenger travel to Asia increased by almost 29% between 2023 and 2026, highlighting the region's growing popularity among its customers. From Japan's bustling cities and ancient temples to India's colourful markets, extraordinary architecture and diverse landscapes, the expanded itineraries promise even more opportunities for cultural discovery. More Affordable Contiki Holidays with New Everyday Pricing Perhaps one of the most welcome changes is Contiki's new approach to pricing. Rather than relying as heavily on flash sales and limited-time discounts, the company is introducing lower everyday prices across its portfolio. The idea is to make it easier for travellers to plan and book their holidays without constantly waiting for the next big promotion. With the cost of living continuing to influence holiday budgets, the new pricing structure is designed to make group travel more accessible. Contiki has also introduced a wider range of trip formats and price points, giving travellers greater flexibility when choosing their next adventure. Why Group Travel Is Becoming More Popular Travelling solo doesn't necessarily mean wanting to spend an entire holiday alone. For many younger travellers, organised group trips offer the opportunity to explore new destinations while meeting people with similar interests. Research highlighted by Contiki found that 75% of young people in the UK and Ireland would consider an organised group trip as part of their next international holiday. Almost six in ten also expressed a preference for travelling in smaller groups of 15 people or fewer. It's a trend that helps explain Contiki's decision to introduce more personalised experiences, smaller-group options and trips built around shared interests. Whether you're travelling alone, with a friend or as part of a couple, group holidays can offer a balance between independence, convenience and the chance to make new connections. A New Travel Series Set in Costa Rica To celebrate the launch, Contiki has also introduced On Contiki, a new short-form drama series directed by award-winning filmmaker Gracie Otto. Set in Costa Rica, the series follows four young travellers as they navigate new adventures, friendships and the inevitable ups and downs of travelling together. Designed for platforms including TikTok and YouTube, the series offers a glimpse into the social side of the Contiki experience. Is Contiki's GO WANDER Worth Exploring? With 76 new trips planned by the end of 2026, eight travel styles and destinations ranging from Europe to the Maldives, Contiki's latest announcement represents a significant expansion of its group holiday offering. And with more affordable pricing, smaller-group experiences and greater choice, the company is looking beyond the traditional backpacking holiday to appeal to a wider range of young travellers. Whether your dream trip involves island hopping in Greece, exploring Japan, discovering hidden Italian villages or heading off on an outdoor adventure, there's now even more choice. Contiki's GO WANDER initiative launched on 29 October 2026, with further information and trip options available through the official Contiki website.

  • What's new in Louisiana in 2027?

From the jazz-filled streets of New Orleans to the colourful Mardi Gras traditions of Lake Charles, Louisiana has never been short of reasons to visit. But beyond its famous music, mouthwatering Southern food and fascinating cultural heritage, there's plenty more happening across the state. New boutique hotels, independent breweries, family-friendly attractions and revitalised waterfront spaces are giving visitors even more reasons to explore the Pelican State. Whether you're planning a Louisiana road trip, a family holiday or a few days soaking up the atmosphere of New Orleans, here are some of the newest places worth adding to your itinerary. Baton Rouge: Celebrity Chefs, Hidden Speakeasies and Exciting New Hotels Louisiana's capital is making a name for itself with a growing collection of restaurants, stylish cocktail bars and ambitious hotel developments. Sitting along the Mississippi River, Baton Rouge combines Southern hospitality with a lively food scene, fascinating history and a serious passion for sport. One of the city's most exciting new dining additions is Emeril's Chophouse, which opened at L'Auberge Casino Hotel on 24 September 2026. The restaurant has taken over the former 18 Steak space, introducing a completely renovated interior with expanded bar seating and a dedicated cocktail lounge. Guests can also enjoy outdoor dining on a deck overlooking the Mississippi River, making it a particularly appealing spot for an evening meal or sunset drinks. For sports fans, there's another major development on the horizon. The historic Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center is undergoing a $40 million transformation into a Sports Illustrated Resort, with an opening planned for late 2027. The new resort will combine traditional hotel accommodation with vacation ownership units and privately owned condominiums. Guests can expect a Sports Illustrated-themed restaurant and bar, upgraded fitness facilities and an immersive experience celebrating Baton Rouge's famous college sports culture. But it's not all about big-name hotels and restaurants. Hidden away in a corner of the Circa 1857 antiques shop, Hearsay is bringing a little Prohibition-era mystery to the city. Opened in October 2026, this atmospheric speakeasy takes inspiration from the secret drinking establishments of the 1920s. Spread across two intimate rooms, its interiors combine antique furnishings, vintage details, dramatic lighting and carefully selected glassware. It's the kind of place that feels like a discovery, perfect for travellers who enjoy seeking out unusual cocktail bars. Food lovers should also add Joelle's Soul and Savour to their Baton Rouge itinerary. Opened on 11 September 2026, the new Creole and Caribbean restaurant has an interesting connection to Louisiana's sporting history. Former Louisiana State University quarterback Rohan Davey, who played for the LSU Tigers between 1998 and 2001 before joining the New England Patriots, is both a chef and silent partner in the venture. Located off Sherwood Forest Boulevard, the restaurant serves a mix of traditional Louisiana favourites and dishes inspired by Davey's Jamaican heritage and Caribbean roots. From Mississippi River dining and hidden cocktail bars to a new sports-themed resort, Baton Rouge is giving visitors plenty of fresh reasons to spend a few days exploring Louisiana's capital. Lafayette: Craft Beer, Local Art and Cajun Culture Known as the heart of Louisiana's Cajun and Creole country, Lafayette is a brilliant destination for travellers looking to experience the state's distinctive food, music and culture. One of the newest additions to the local scene is Fête Brewing, an independently owned microbrewery coming to Youngsville, just outside Lafayette. Located on Savoy Road, the brewery will feature a seven-barrel brewing system capable of producing approximately 200 gallons of beer per batch. Unlike large commercial breweries, Fête Brewing is designed around the taproom experience, with beer brewed and served on-site. Visitors will even be able to watch the brewing process, with stainless-steel fermentation tanks visible from the seating area. Art lovers, meanwhile, should look out for Cocodrie Collective, an artist-owned creative shop that has expanded with another location in Lafayette. Founded by Acadiana artist Colette Bernard, the collective celebrates independent artists and makers, offering visitors an opportunity to discover locally designed pieces and unique souvenirs. Bernard, known for her colourful designs and popular Career Claw hair clips, originally opened Cocodrie Collective in Downtown Lafayette in 2023. Lafayette's food scene is also continuing to grow, with new Vietnamese cafés, coffee shops, tea spots and delis adding to a city already famous for its culinary heritage. Lake Charles: Mardi Gras Magic and Family Adventures If you thought Mardi Gras was all about New Orleans, think again! Southwest Louisiana has its own spectacular carnival traditions, and Lake Charles is home to the state's second-largest Mardi Gras celebration. The Mardi Gras Museum of Imperial Calcasieu reopened in April 2026 in a new facility within the Nellie Cultural District. The museum houses what is described as the world's largest collection of Mardi Gras costumes, showcasing the extraordinary craftsmanship, colours and creativity behind the region's celebrations. Interactive exhibits explore the history and traditions of Mardi Gras in Southwest Louisiana, making this a fascinating stop even if you're visiting outside carnival season. For families travelling with children, Port Wonder is another attraction worth discovering. This 32,000-square-foot waterfront complex brings together the Children's Museum of Southwest Louisiana and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries' Nature & Science Center. Designed to inspire curiosity through play, science and nature, Port Wonder offers interactive learning experiences for younger visitors. Even the building itself is worth a look, with a distinctive curved roofline inspired by the winding waterways of Southwest Louisiana. Monroe-West Monroe: A Boutique Hotel Making American History Louisiana's hotel scene is evolving too, with a particularly interesting development in Monroe. The Hotel Monroe, part of Hilton's Tapestry Collection, has been recognised as the first fully certified gluten-free hotel in the United States. Located in Downtown Monroe, the boutique property combines contemporary accommodation with a distinctive culinary offering, including an in-house restaurant and rooftop bar. With guest rooms, suites and meeting facilities, the hotel offers a new accommodation option for visitors exploring northeast Louisiana, particularly those looking for gluten-free hospitality. Monroe-West Monroe is also developing a reputation as a destination for food lovers. Local chef Cory Bahr was named a semifinalist in the 2026 James Beard Awards for Best Chef: South, while his expanding restaurant portfolio now includes Sushi Koko. For travellers interested in discovering Louisiana's culinary scene beyond New Orleans, Monroe-West Monroe is increasingly worth a visit. New Orleans: Boutique Hotels, Riverfront Parks and More Flights Of course, no Louisiana travel guide would be complete without New Orleans. Famous for its jazz clubs, historic architecture, Creole cuisine and legendary nightlife, the city continues to evolve while holding on to the character that makes it so special. One of its newer accommodation options is The Monarch Hotel, a 34-room boutique property located above S Bar on St. Charles Avenue. With its intimate scale and lively setting, The Monarch offers a different kind of New Orleans hotel experience, putting guests close to the energy of the surrounding neighbourhood. Elsewhere in the city, the completion of the second phase of Goldring Woldenberg Riverfront Park has opened up more public space along the Mississippi River. The expanded park provides impressive views of the river and New Orleans, including areas of the waterfront that had been inaccessible to the public for generations. New features include landscaped green spaces, shaded seating, cooling misters, a Louisiana marsh-inspired children's playground and an open-air covered gathering space known as the NOLA Front Porch. It's a welcome addition for visitors who want to enjoy the outdoors between exploring the French Quarter, sampling beignets and listening to live music. Getting to New Orleans is also becoming easier for international visitors. British Airways has announced an increase in its London Heathrow–New Orleans service from three to four flights per week, providing additional transatlantic travel options. For travellers departing from Ireland, the Heathrow connection offers another way to reach Louisiana and begin a Southern USA adventure. Shreveport: Discover Louisiana's Wild Side Louisiana may be famous for its music and food, but its natural landscapes are every bit as impressive. In Caddo Parish, near Shreveport, the expanded Walter B. Jacobs Nature Center offers a fantastic opportunity to explore the region's wildlife and outdoor spaces. The 24,000-square-foot facility has been designed for visitors of all ages, combining environmental education with hands-on experiences. Inside, guests can discover interactive exhibits, live animal displays and a birds-of-prey aviary. Outside, five miles of hiking trails provide opportunities to explore the natural beauty of northwest Louisiana. It's an especially appealing stop for families, wildlife enthusiasts and anyone looking to swap busy city streets for a little fresh air. Why Louisiana Should Be on Your Travel List What makes Louisiana such an exciting destination is its diversity. One day you could be listening to live jazz in New Orleans, the next discovering Cajun cooking in Lafayette, exploring Mardi Gras traditions in Lake Charles or hiking through the forests of northern Louisiana. And with new hotels, restaurants, cultural attractions and public spaces continuing to open, there's even more to discover beyond the state's best-known landmarks. For travellers planning a Southern USA holiday in 2026 or 2027, Louisiana offers a fantastic mix of history, food, music, nature and genuine Southern hospitality. Whether it's your first visit or your fifth, there's always another side of Louisiana waiting to be explored.
