  • Vienna-Magical Christmas Markets

If you’re like me and love Christmas, you’ll enjoy a good Christmas Market. In my opinion, Vienna is top of the list. Vienna doesn’t mess about when it comes to Christmas markets, they host some of the largest and oldest ones in the world! Known for its rich history, classical music heritage, and stunning architecture it also encompasses some of the nicest Christmas Markets in Europe. Vienna is the capital city of Austria and is home to twenty-seven palaces and iconic landmarks like Schónbrunn Palace, St Stephens Cathedral, The Hofburg Imperial Palace and lots more in between all of which have their very own Christmas Markets and lie on virtually every street corner. Highlights of Vienna also include the Vienna Opera House, it is one of the world’s leading opera houses and is located in the heart of the city, it has a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century. It’s a cultural hub and a symbol of Vienna’s musical legacy attracting both locals and visitors seeking a world-class artistic experience. The Am Hof Advent Market on Stephansplatz is located next to the Vienna State Opera House. The Market at Schónbrunn Palace provides a royal backdrop, while the Spittelberb market in a historic district offers a more intimate experience. Each market is filled with stalls packed to capacity with traditional Austrian handcrafted gingerbreads, Austrian goulash, and lots more delicacies, including multiple flavours of Gluhwein, punch, and local beers. The markets cater to all tastes and each one has their own unique flair. Probably the biggest and most famous market in Vienna is the Christkindlmarkt at Rathausplatz located in front of City Hall. The 19th-century Rathausplatz is transformed into a magical wonderland. At night the trees are embellished with twinkling lights to create an enchanting woodland and visitors are invited to sample all the traditional delicacies the market has to offer in magical surroundings. The city is also famous for its coffee house culture and delicious pastries, including the renowned Sachertorte, a chocolate cake made up of three layers of chocolate sponge with apricot jam between each layer and covered with chocolate icing, it’s simply delicious! Coffee houses are the perfect place to immerse yourself in Viennese tradition and atmosphere while enjoying delicious coffee and cakes. We visited the famous Cafe Landtmann where we enjoyed one of their home-baked traditional strudels served with hot custard and flavoursome coffee. The café was the preferred coffeehouse of Sigmund Freud where he found many of his important patients that played a crucial role in his research. It also served as a meeting place for many of the leading industrialists, politicians, thinkers and artists in Austria. These are just a few highlights. Vienna’s rich cultural scene and historical attractions combined with the amazing Christmas markets offer something for everyone. The markets operate from 11th November to 26th December when Vienna’s prettiest squares transform into magical Christmas markets. Aer Lingus and Ryanair fly direct from Dublin to Vienna daily so there’s no reason not to put this amazing city on your bucket list.

  • Christmas Gifts of Travel Memories

I don’t know about you guys, but for me, I found that as our children got older, it became more difficult to choose gifts that were suited to them. So now, in today’s world, I believe most teenagers already have the latest tech gadgets, fashion accessories, sports gear etc. Some of them even have the latest iPhone and Xbox. As a result, parents are struggling to source the ideal Christmas presents. This is where we, at Travel Times come up with some exciting ideas for gifting teenagers travel experiences that combine adventure and fun and it also means you, as parents, can tag along, have some fun, and get to spend some quality time with your offspring while making fabulous memories too. We have listed below a few ideas that may be suited to your budget and individual taste. Concert Tickets: Purchase tickets for their favourite band or artist abroad and make a weekend break around it. For example, Coldplay are performing in Rome from the 12th to the 16th June 2024 Outdoor Adventure Weekend : Plan a weekend getaway for activities like zip-lining, hiking, or camping. Annecy, France has a plethora of outdoor activities like hiking, biking or boating and it’s also one of the most popular paragliding sights in the world and it’s only a short flight away too. Surfing or Watersports Lessons: Arrange lessons for surfing, paddleboarding, or another water activity at a coastal destination. In fairness, Ireland boasts some of the world’s most incredible surfing spots along its rugged coastline. Bundoran is known as the surf capital of Ireland and also offers lots of other watersports. Hot Air Balloon Ride: Provide an unforgettable experience with a hot air balloon ride, offering a unique perspective of the landscape. I did this in Morocco and it was a truly unforgettable experience. Theatre or Broadway Show Tickets: Gift tickets to a theatre production or Broadway show, combined with a stay in your favourite city. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is currently running in London and New York. For older teens (and adults) U2 Live at The Sphere Las Vegas runs until March 2024. Cooking Class and Culinary Tour: One of my favourite gifts for the foodie teen would have to be a culinary tour in one of Italy’s many regions. Italy is renowned for its diverse and exquisite food and is home to some of the best cookery classes and culinary tours available. There are plenty to choose from, from Pizza and spaghetti making to truffle hunting. Flights operate daily too. Shopping Trips: What teenager doesn’t love a good shopping spree? especially when it’s all about them! Gift them an overnight/weekend trip to a shopping outlet in Europe or if your budget allows head for Woodbury Commons premium outlets just outside New York City, I promise, they will love you forever!! Theme Park Passes: There are lots of theme parks around Europe, the UK and the USA. Depending on your budget you could purchase tickets for any of these destinations combined with theme park passes for the duration of your stay. A really popular one is PortAventura World in Salou, Spain. It’s the biggest theme park in Spain and the third largest in Europe and again there are year-round flights at really good value. Visit The Winter Wonderland – Lapland: I don’t know any teenager who wouldn’t love the gift of a lifetime at Christmas and that’s a visit to The Artic Circle. Lapland is synonymous with winter magic. Blanketed in snow during the colder months, it offers opportunities for activities like snowmobiling, dog sledging, ice fishing and cross-country skiing and no visit to Lapland would be complete without a visit to the world-famous Santa Claus Village where children and adults alike get to meet the main man himself, Santa, explore his workshop, and experience the Christmas spirit year-round. Find out more about Lapland packages on Sunway.ie . There’s still plenty of time to organise and book the ultimate Christmas gift for your “Dynamic Explorers in the Adventure of Adolescence” Teenagers. In doing one of these memorable experiences with your teens you will be creating positive experiences that will contribute to their overall happiness and as I said earlier, they will love you forever!!

  • The Comeback Countries & Where we’re Travelling in 2024

2023 can safely be called the year that travel came roaring back, with bookings for certain destinations superseding pre-pandemic numbers. Community tourism pioneer, G Adventures , this year reveals the places that are seeing the most traction in terms of forward bookings thanks to exciting new reasons to visit. What’s most exciting is that people are looking to travel to some more ‘traditional’ destinations in a new way – a way that gives back to local people and communities, and gets them closer to the culture and tradition of a place.  G Adventures’ founder, Bruce Poon Tip, says travellers have changed over the past three years and are now looking for deeper, more meaningful experiences.  “What we’re seeing is that people want to stay longer and go deeper into a destination. They’re travelling less frequently; instead of taking three one-week trips a year, they’re staying longer in a single destination. And while they are there they want to connect with local people and their cultures, and to experience community tourism in its purest form.  “We’re also still seeing a lot of travellers checking off those big ‘bucket list’ trips, with many still making up for lost time, and they’re keen to stay active when they travel – that’s why we’re seeing such huge growth in some of our most iconic locations,” said Mr. Poon Tip.   Packed with the best destinations travellers can enjoy in 2024, the Where To Travel list focuses not just on meaningful community tourism experiences, but also places which have new and noteworthy reasons to visit.  JAPAN  – Travellers can’t get enough of Japan since it reopened, with the land of the rising sun also seeing rising bookings. G Adventures reports a 134 per cent increase in bookings for 2024, and this trend is set to continue with the launch of the small group adventure operator’s Geluxe Collection of premium active trips. The new Japan itinerary includes hiking the remote Michinoku Coastal Trail, which was constructed after the tsunami to bring community tourism back to Iwate. G Adventures is the first major operator to offer this hike. GET THERE:  G Adventures’  Japan: Kyoto, Tokyo & the Michinoku Coastal Trail  trip is priced from €6999pp for an 11-day trip from Tokyo to Kyoto. Travellers will discover villages outside Kyoto by foot, as well as hiking up to the Unotori shrine in Fudai, Iwate, to witness a unique cultural performance that has all but died out in other parts of Japan. PORTUGAL –  The numbers don’t lie. Portugal has seen stand-out growth with traveller numbers tripling since 2019 and up 33 per cent compared to 2022. Affordable and accessible, with fantastic food, culture and history, there are plenty of reasons to want to visit this European gem. We say go before it gets even more popular, as its star looks set to continue to rise.  GET THERE:  G Adventures’  Highlights of Portugal  itinerary is priced from €1299pp for a seven-day trip from Lisbon to Porto. On this trip, travellers will sit down to a traditional meal to the sound of a Fado performance by Portuguese folk music artists in one of Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhoods, and immerse themselves in history and culture at UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the Monastery of Batalha, Coimbra University, and the picturesque town of Sintra. UZBEKISTAN –  Uzbekistan – and the ‘Stans in general – have become quite the hotspot as people look to check off big ‘bucket list’ destinations and get further afield to lesser-known countries. Uzbekistan has seen a 53 per cent increase year over year, also usurping 2019 by 16 percent. The stunning Center for Islamic Civilization in Tashkent is set to open its doors in April 2024, and joins the Center for Contemporary Arts, which was opened in 2019, as two new cultural hubs set to attract the attention of travellers.  GET THERE:  G Adventures’  Highlights of Uzbekistan  trip is priced from €1549pp for a 10-day trip from Tashkent return. During the trip, travellers will head out into the desert to visit Chashma Complex, a pilgrimage site in the territory of Nurata, dominated by ruins of Alexander the Great’s fortress, visit the remote Aydarkul Lake for a swim before continuing on for an overnight stay in a local yurt camp, where they enjoy an authentic Uzbekistan dinner and an evening Kazakh singing show.  INDIA –  India has picked up the pace in the past year with bookings doubling between 2022 and 2023. G Adventures partnership with National Geographic means exclusive experiences are built into every itinerary.  GET THERE:  A  National Geographic Journeys with G Adventures North India Highlights  trip is priced from €1199 per person from Delhi return. In Jaipur, known as the “Pink City,” travellers will meet with a local historian and sociology scholar to learn about India’s complex social fabric and traditions, and discuss a range of topics from the country’s belief systems to its architecture. MEXICO  – Vibrant and colourful Mexico has proven more popular than pre-pandemic, helped by the introduction of new trips to the G Adventures portfolio. These include two new Geluxe Collection premium active itineraries, which put a fresh active spin on what has been seen as a more traditional ‘beach’ destination. Up 24 per cent than in 2019, and 28 per cent when compared to last year, Mexico continues to make consistent gains.  GET THERE:  A 14-day  Mexico: Central Mexico & the Yucatan Peninsula trip is priced from €5399pp, travelling from Oaxaca to Tulum. Travellers will wander the cobblestone streets and markets of Oaxaca and devour mole in Puebla, before biking through agave fields and taking a break from the heat with a swim in a jungle sinkhole near Merida.  VIETNAM  – Another country that was late to reopen but has doubled its traveller numbers since 2022 is Vietnam, which is also a great value choice for families looking for adventure on their next trip. With tasty food, beautiful sights and friendly people, it makes a wonderful opportunity for children to learn about a different culture in a fun and engaging way. GET THERE:  A 12-day  Vietnam Family Adventure  is priced from €1379 per adult and €1219 per child, travelling from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. This trip visits Oodles of Noodles, a G for Good project supporting former street youth where travellers help prepare and cook a number of different types of noodles.   GREECE –  As travellers have started flocking back to Europe, Greece has seen huge growth, up 90 per cent from 2019 numbers and 24 per cent year on year. One of the best ways to avoid the crowds and get amongst it with locals, is by boat. Taking travellers to remote islands to enjoy local cuisine and culture, G Adventures’ Sailing programme epitomises community tourism, making sure wealth is distributed to lesser-known locales while still taking in the highlights of the islands. GET THERE:  A 10-day  Sailing Greece – Santorini to Santorini  trip is priced from €1849 per person, travelling from Santorini return. On-shore experiences include strolling through the markets of Syros, uncovering the beauty of the Venetian ruins in Paros hiking through the trails and paths of Sifnos.  THAILAND –  Thailand also continues its epic comeback, and we can expect it to boom even more as travellers head there before the ‘White Lotus Effect’ takes hold, with filming for the third season set to begin in 2024. Up 76 per cent in traveller numbers year on year, Thailand is still a solid choice for young travellers and backpackers looking for an affordable escape.  GET THERE:  The  Bangkok to Hanoi: Chiang Mai, Night Markets & Streetside Bars  Roamies trip in partnership with Hostelworld is priced from €899pp for a nine day trip from Bangkok to Hanoi. In Val Thorens you can wrap up each day with live music and dancing in slopeside hotspots – from Europe’s highest pub, the Frog and Roast Beef to the biggest dancefloor in the Alps at Club Malaysia. There’s lots of choice if you’re all about activities too – from flying high on Europe’s highest zipline to donning a dry suit and floating on the surface of an icy lake. Fancy some family-friendly fun? Try tackling France’s longest toboggan run, the Cosmojet. It starts way up at 3,000m, and with 6km of twists and turns from top to bottom, you’re bound to want an encore. The Hotel Tango is a fun place to stay right in the centre of the resort, with its popular bar and indulgent spa. Best of all, you’ll have ski-in, ski-out access to the highest resort in Europe. In the afternoons, the bar and terrace is your spot for a bit of al fresco après. Dublin – France: Depart 30th March 2024. Staying at 3* Hotel Tango, Val Thorens for 7 nights on a half-board basis from €1,649pp Families – Italy – Hotel Grand Paradiso The laid-back atmosphere, quiet slopes and quality mountain restaurants are what make skiing in Italy so great and perfect for families looking to make core memories. Families will love Passo Tonale, which has a relaxed atmosphere. This is also one of the best places for children to learn to ski in Italy. As well as having a great ski school, the 100km area has quiet slopes with plenty of space to practise. Little ones will especially love the gentle runs, inflatable slide and tubing in the Leolandia Fantaski zone. Stay at the Grand Paradiso, where you can hit the slopes by simply climbing the steps behind the hotel. If you are still learning, it’s an easy 10-minute walk to the ski school. Families can make the most of the Crystal Childcare clubs, where kids can have fun with games in the snow, crafts and soft play. Dublin – Italy:  Depart 16th March 2024. Staying at 4*  Hotel Grand Paradiso , Passo Tonale for 7 nights on a half-board basis from €769pps, €2,219 (2 adults + 1 child), or €3,299 (2 adults + 2 children) Beginners – Andorra Andorra’s ski resorts are rated some of the best in Europe for learning to ski. With lots of gentle greens and blues in Arinsal, as well as one of the best English-speaking ski schools in Europe, you’ll be confidently cruising in no time. Hotel Montané is our top pick in Arinsal. It’s opposite the main gondola so just grab your gear from the boot room each morning and you’ll be swooshing down the slopes in a matter of minutes. Dublin – Andorra:  Depart 17th March 2024. Staying at 3*  Hotel Montané , Arinsal for 7 nights on a half-board basis from €629pps, €1,829 (2 adults + 1 child), or €2,409 (2 adults + 2 children) Advanced – Austria Austria’s ski resorts are full of charm. It’s got the best lift systems in the world, giving speedy and seamless access to linked ski areas with tree-lined slopes. From tricky gullies to snow-filled bowls, St Anton’s a top pick for expert skiers. One of the best ways to take in the area is to tackle the Run of Fame – a 65km route that starts in St Anton and ends in the resort of Warth-Schröcken, on the far side of the Arlberg. Stay at Hotel Arlberg and you’ll be a few minutes’ walk from the Nasserein gondola and the action in the town centre, but far enough away to be quiet in the evenings. After a hard day of skiing, visit the spa to recharge in the sauna and steam room. Dublin – Austria:  Depart 16th March 2024. Staying at 4*  Hotel Arlberg , St Anton for 7 nights on a half-board basis from €1,609pps, €4,399 (2 adults + 1 child), or €5,439 (2 adults + 2 children) Budget-Friendly – Bulgaria Bulgaria is brilliant value so your spending money will go a lot further here. With cheap drinks and buzzing bars, the entertaining après scene is another draw, making skiing in Bulgaria a popular choice for younger groups. In Borovets, ski lessons and lift passes cost less than elsewhere in Europe, so you can rack up the ski time without straining the bank balance. If you are after a great-value ski stay with a laid-back atmosphere, take a look at Hotel Lion Borovets. The free shuttle bus will whisk you to the lifts in around 5-minutes each morning. After your day on the slopes you can relax in the indoor pool, spa & wellness facilities, fitness centre or the games room. Dublin – Bulgaria:  Depart 9th March 2024. Staying at 4*  Hotel Lion Borovets , Borovets for 7 nights on a half-board basis from €609pps, €1,849 (2 adults + 1 child), or €2,589 (2 adults + 2 children) Luxury – Austria Austria’s ski resorts are full of charm, mostly pretty villages with onion-domed churches and a long tradition of hospitality. Most accommodation in Austria is good quality, family-run hotels. Hotel Alpina is part of our ‘Summit Collection’, a curated selection of premium ski accommodation. Here you can expect fresh, modern décor, fantastic facilities and friendly, local staff. It’s set right on the slopes overlooking the village, so you can ski to and from the hotel each day. When it’s après o’clock, swing by the lounge to sip a cocktail. If you fancy spa time, grab your swim things and head to the luxurious wellness area. Enjoy some leisurely lengths in the pool, drift between the different saunas or treat your ski legs to a professional massage. Dublin – Austria: Depart 9th March 2024. Staying at 4* Hotel Alpina, Obergurgl for 7 nights on a half-board basis from €2,049pps, €5,369 (2 adults + 1 children), or €6,649 (2 adults + 2 children) All-Inclusive – Austria Want to ski down those picturesque, wooded slopes on the Austrian mountains? Having your lift pass and ski gear is essential. But what is also essential is being well fed so you have energy on the slopes. At the Alpin Resort Sport & Spa you can make sure to take full advantage of the all-inclusive basis on offer. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are catered for here. The evening meals are a gourmet affair, with five courses of fine dining and a tempting dessert buffet to finish. And all your drinks are included too – cheers. Dublin – Austria:  Depart 16 th  March 2024. Staying at 4*  Alpin Resort Sport & Spa , Saalbach for 7 nights on an all-inclusive basis from €2,009pps, €5,369 (2 adults + 1 children) Convenience (ski-in, ski-out) – France France is a firm favourite for ski holidays, loved for its diverse, easy-to-reach resorts. It was the first country to link its resorts with lifts and is still home to most of the best-known ski areas, many of them at high altitude. A convenient ski holiday to us means a ski-in, ski-out accommodation, an all-inclusive basis and plenty of hotel facilities including childcare. Les Cimes du Soleil offers all of these. Here you can ski to and from the boot room door, dig into a buffet spread and have a drink out onto the panoramic sun terrace to soak up the snowy scenery. Parents can make the most of the hotel-run childcare and enjoy a relaxing session in the sauna. Dublin – France:  Depart 25th February 2024. Staying at 3*  Les Cimes du Soleil , Avoriaz for 7 nights on an all-inclusive basis from €1,829pps, €5,319 (2 adults + 1 child), or €7,329 (2 adults + 2 children) More details: Crystal Ski Holidays | Get More Winter
