The largest of the Balearic Islands packs a punch when it comes to architecture, beauty and culture. Spotting turtles on a forest walk, eating a fresh tapas lunch in Palma, taking a vintage tram and wine tasting under lemon trees are just some of the varied experiences I enjoyed on a jam-packed trip to Mallorca. I’ve been hard-pressed to narrow my recommendations down to a top three from a bustling and creative itinerary, but here we go: Vintage Tram Ride between Soller and Port de Soller This 15 minute antique tram ride is nothing short of a joy. It’s like stepping back in time when you board the wood panelled carriage with polished brass accents, and shuttle out of Soller, passing orange trees and houses with intricate tiling. Arriving into Port de Soller- a charming harbour town nestled against the Tramuntana mountains. Ramanyà Winery This beautiful vineyard is set beside a charming family home. Toni and his mother greet visitors warmly and with great humour before setting off through the gardens which are scattered with historic pottery, a collection of old farm equipment and sweeping, fragrant lemon trees. The wine cellar itself is full of oak barrels where red, white and sparkling wines are produced lovingly. The tasting is set up at a rustic table where visitors can casually purchase their favourite bottle. Walking tour of Plama While Palma can be seen by coach, tram, train and boat, a walking tour is hard to beat. The streets twist and wind amongst architectural styles spanning back to the bronze age. The Paseo Marítimo is the promenade that runs right around the Bay of Palma and it’s a jolt of magic when you emerge from the cobblestone streets to view the glittering bay. For foodies, there is no shortage of places to eat but the Mercat de L’Olivar food market is stuffed with mouth watering local produce-especially prawns, fish and charcuterie for making your own paella. The Hotel- TUI Blue Sensatori Hotel, Biomar This hotel is an all-inclusive five-star TUI hotel. Part of their ‘BLUE’ range of hotels, the ‘Sensatori’ promises to create the exact experience their client craves. Quite a lofty promise you might think, but The Tui Blue Sensatori in Biomar, did deliver. It is a beautifully designed hotel with Nordic interior influences. The vast space is separated into adult-only and family led areas. The latter has a glass-fronted creche with bar and pool for parents within viewing distance. The restaurants and bars are far beyond anything I’ve experienced in an all-inclusive hotel before, it has an extremely luxurious feel to it and is worthy of each of its five stars. For LGBTQI+ travellers seeking a tropical getaway, concerns about authenticity and safety are significant. Cultural differences in various destinations often pose challenges, leaving travellers feeling uneasy or vulnerable to discrimination. Nowadays, the  focus on “gay-friendly” holiday options predominantly cater to a younger, male demographic, centered around nightlife and parties, inadvertently neglecting a broader spectrum of LGBTQI+ individuals.This results in a growing and diverse audience in search of holiday destinations where they can feel safe to express themselves fully, with a range of adventures and experiences tailored to their needs. In response to this demand, Tahiti Tourisme , in collaboration with agency Circul8 and Air Tahiti Nui , decided on a strategic initiative, ‘The Treasured Test’  to promote The Islands of Tahiti as a secure and welcoming destination. This campaign aims to highlight not only the romantic retreat appeal but also the depth of cultural acceptance present in Tahitian society, extending beyond conventional LGBTQI+ party scenes.  Central to the concept was the involvement of authentic LGBTQI+ individuals, rather than actors. An open call was made to the LGBTQI+ community to select a diverse group to experience The Islands of Tahiti firsthand, and to share their unfiltered impressions. The selected group was comprised of a cross-section of LGBTQI+ identities,  including US lesbian couple Jen and Jess, French gay couple Seb and Diego, and two Japanese friends Yuma and Mizuki, both transgender men. Over the course of ten days, a film crew followed the group while they immersed themselves in the culture and experiences of The Islands of Tahiti, from traditional dance lessons in Tahiti to exploring the lagoons of Bora Bora through snorkeling. Throughout their journey, they were free to travel and interact with locals, without having to worry about hiding any part of their identity. After this experience, the participants unanimously expressed gratitude for the warmth and acceptance they encountered from the local community. They emphasised feeling completely at ease, liberated from the need to mask any aspect of their identity. Looking forward to discovering the canals of Venice on a gondola ride? Visiting the Rialto Bridge and wandering off into a charming corner of the square to have some real Italian gelato in one of the most romantic cities in the world? If this sounds like you, and you’re planning a day trip to Venice, 29 days during the year will require you to pay a 5 Euro fee – just to enter. What is the Venice access fee?  Introduced in April of 2024, the 5 Euro fee targets travellers that are visiting the floating city for a daytrip.The reason for the fee? Overtourism. 20 million people flock to the city each year, while the number of residents is only 49,000. On peak days, 120,000 tourists fill the streets of Venice, and when overcrowding hits highs, one-way traffic systems and diversions are introduced and directed by the police – so nobody gets bumped into a canal, and so Venice’s fragile buildings and strained infrastructure have a chance to breathe. Not to mention the locals, who have trouble going about their business. It all makes for a woeful visitor experience, too.  So, how will a fee help? Authorities hope that from the introduction of the visitor fee the city will be more livable for residents, and that it will discourage crowds on peak days. Which technically makes your trip to Venice easier, and more pleasant. No more tucking in elbows on the Rialto Bridge. It’s a steep drop, too. On what days do I have to pay the Venice Access Fee? Day trippers will need to pay an entry fee on 29 peak days in 2024. This is during the first peak tourism period of 2024 (April 25 to May 5), each weekend in May and June, plus the first two weekends of July. The Venice Access Fee will only apply during peak hours from 8:30am to 4pm. Those arriving later for dinner or a concert won’t have to pay. Entry Fee Dates: April: 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30  May: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, 26 June: 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, 30  July: 6, 7, 13, 14 Does everyone have to pay? No. Children under the age of 14 as well as travellers staying overnight will not have to pay.If you’re staying in Venice overnight, a city tax of 4 Euro per person applies for each day of your stay.However, even if you’re staying overnight during the fee access dates and paying the city tax, you will still need to register for an exemption. You can do this through the Venezia Unica website.  Will this fee stay the same? The city plans to raise the entry fee on days when visitor numbers reach a certain threshold. However, they have never revealed any details of what that threshold number is. For the 29 days planned in 2024, the fee will remain at 5 euro. How can I pay? You can visit the official website Venezia Unica to pay online, ahead of your trip. Once you pay, you’ll receive a unique QR access code, accessible through The Venice Pass app.  It’s also possible to pay at the checkpoints located throughout the city – there’s a lot of them, and they cover all entrances, so don’t even think about skipping the fee. Looking to visit Venice? The best, but also busiest time to go is between April-September. This period is also the warmest, but be warned – it’s illegal to swim in the canals. If you’re looking to avoid crowds caused by warm weather or major festivals, I recommend late March. Winter can be cold and rainy, and the Acqua Alta (the high tide that will prevent you from stepping foot onto St. Mark’s Square ) happens between the months of October and January. A good alternative to being trapped on the many elevated plank walkways installed during high tide is to arrive in late December, just in time for the famous masquerade New Year’s Eve balls.  If you’re looking to completely immerse yourself in the spirit of the masquerade, the annual Venice Carnival that paints the streets of Venice in colourful confetti flakes, will take place from 22nd February to 4th March in 2025. Balls are hosted regularly during this season, and you can find them on Vivo Venetia , who also offer carnival costume rental with gowns and suits entirely handmade in Venice.  Interested? Brides are encouraged to wear a veil, for “traditions sake”. Growing Interest With 20 million nudists in Europe alone, it’s no surprise that there’s a growing interest in naturist ceremonies. Even though nudist beaches have existed in Italy for decades, a law introduced in 2017 has enabled individual regions to legally dedicate stretches of coastline for naturists. Today, there are 17 official nudist beaches in Italy and beyond. For years, Tuscany has led the way with five, but Sardinia is hoping to steal its crown with its newest move – naturist civil ceremonies. Luigi Tedeschi, Mayor of San Vero Milis , said it was a “question of equality” in authorising weddings for naturists on the local beach. He was initially inspired to open the beaches to ceremonies after a German couple expressed their desire to wed without any clothes. Originally, when the beach became officially designated as a nudist spot in May of 2022, Tedeschi said the move drew a few sniggers in the town’s bar but was otherwise supported. “I’m 65 and remember the times when nudity on the beach was normal,” he said. “ Is Benas was already being used by naturists – all we’ve done is regulate it.” Now, couples can exchange vows amidst the beauty of San Vero Milis ‘ shell beach in whichever way they want, as Tedeschi said; “There are beaches in Sardinia where official marriage is also allowed. And some even choose to say yes underwater.” Cultural Shift Overall, the growing interest in naturist ceremonies reflects a broader cultural shift towards embracing nudity as a natural expression of freedom. Supporting this shift is the Nudiverse Association , whose president, Pamela Deiana , commented on the initiative, “The culture of shared nudity and the social perception of the nude community in Italy, in its principles linked to wellbeing, sustainability, inclusion, caring for places, the theme of consent, untying everything from the preconceptions and prejudices of those who associate nudity with sexual availability, has a cultural aspect that needs to be overcome” The Vision But Sardinia has a greater vision for naturists – the island is not only planning to add to its list of official beaches, but also has visions of creating naturist hotels, hiking trails and even an entire village as it endeavors to attract the growing market. Pamela Deiana from the Nudiverse Association adds, “We are working to break down barriers, so that there may be nude areas without fences, in peaceful proximity and coexistence between those who decide to keep their clothes on and those who choose not to wear them, simple integral nudity that, if told in the right words, unites rather than divides”

KAT100 by UTMB · 1st to 3rd August 2024 Trail runners can now lace up their running shoes for the  KAT100 by UTMB  in PillerseeTal for five distances across the Kitzbühel Alps. This event also features Austria’s longest ultra trail, the “100 Miles” distance – covering 173.2 kilometres and 9,929 vertical metres. Several other distances – the Endurance Trail, Marathon Trail, Speed Trail and Easy Trail – are also available, all starting from Fieberbrunn. Hiking Events Zillertal Steinbock March · 17th August 2024 The “ classic amongst alpine marches ” is already over 50 years old and will over a 30-kilometre route through the Zillertal Alps – with contenders covering an ascent of 1,871 metres and a descent of 1,610 metres. It starts at the Nature Park House in Ginzling, after which the route leads towards the Floitental valley on to the highest point, the Mörchnerscharte at almost 2,900 metres, before continuing via the Berliner Hut and Zemmgrund to the finish at Alpengasthof Breitlahner. Arlberger Wadlbeißer · 31st August 2024 13.5 kilometres, 700 metres in altitude and 24 obstacles: The  Arlberger Wadlbeißer  at the end of August is not your everyday kind of obstacle course. It demands everything from its participants – as they run, slide and scramble to successfully reach the finish line. In addition to the long-distance version, there is also a shorter route of 7 kilometres and 15 obstacles. Both variants lead through the impressive surrounding mountains of St. Anton am Arlberg. Red Bull Dolomitenmann · 7th September 2024  The  Red Bull Dolomitenmann , is one of the world’s toughest relay competitions, against the spectacular Dolomites backdrop. Around 100 teams from all over the world will compete in mountain running, paragliding, white-water kayaking and mountain biking. The Health Resort The Health Resort is a medical centre unique on a global scale, and it is the only facility in Poland where treatment and rehabilitation of the respiratory system is complemented with treatments based on natural brine from the local salt deposit, located at a depth of 255 m.   Currently, subterraneotherapy, apart from using the natural therapeutic resource of the underground salt chamber microclimate, is also based on active rehabilitation of the respiratory system under the supervision of a team of doctors and medical rehabilitation specialists. The main tools used in this respiratory rehabilitation are breathing exercises, based on the teaching of proper breathing and exercises of respiratory muscles and diaphragm.  Pro-health education is also important in order to achieve the intended rehabilitation goals. Two original pre-independence steam locomotives have been lovingly restored to power the Revolution Express , a new heritage tourism experience in central Vietnam that will start in late 2024 or early 2025. Indochina Rail Tourist Service joint stock company and Wafaifo Optimisers have signed a management agreement for Wafaifo Optimisers to manage the Revolution Express steam train, a remarkable new tourist experience in central Vietnam, which is expected to launch late 2024 or early 2025. Two original steam locomotives from the 1960s have been lovingly restored to working condition. The locomotives will pull two fully appointed retro-styled carriages that can seat up to 57 passengers each, as well as a custom-made kitchen carriage and a baggage carriage.The locomotives are the last remaining working steam ones in Vietnam, dating from the pre-independence era, both built locally in Vietnam, based on the French Mikado design. They have been painstakingly restored over a number of years, using original parts and utilising the skills of the last remaining steam engineers working for Vietnam Railways. The Route The Revolution Express will make a return trip between Danang city and the former royal capital of Hue each day. Each journey will traverse the scenically remarkable Hai Van coastal mountain range and stop at Lang Co adjacent to beautiful lagoon and beach scenery. Surrounded by old world splendour and served by talents in period costume, passengers will be able to enjoy light food and drinks as they view one of the most picturesque coastlines and mountain passes in Southeast Asia. “We are proud to bring these old dames of rail back to life and to showcase important periods in Vietnamese history from imperial through colonial rule and finally the struggle to independence,” said Mr Gebbie, Chairman of Indochina Rail. “We seek to give visitors an interactive sense of Vietnam’s history and future. Whether you enjoy learning about history or trains, or just want to ride an authentic heritage steam train over the famously scenic Hai Van Pass, the Revolution Express will offer a magical experience for young and old alike,” he said. Themed Dining & New Restaurants on the Route Highlights of the tourist experience will include themed dining at the three railway stations on the route: Kim Lien (Danang), Lang Co and Hue. Each station will have its own menus and entertainment schedules to meet the arrival of the Revolution Express.Importantly, the train stations with their restaurants and retail offerings are being designed to also attract other road and VNR (Vietnam National Rail) passengers travelling between Danang, Lang Co and Hue on the scenic coastal route. In Hue, the original train maintenance building is being beautifully refurbished as the Station Restaurant . The venue is being themed in an imperial manner befitting the history of Hue, the last bastion of the dynastic era in Vietnam. In Lang Co, the restaurant will be themed to mark the independence that Vietnam enjoys today. Apart from a full restaurant offering, food carts will be on the station platform offering homemade ice cream, freshly squeezed fruit juices, Vietnamese coffee, and newly pressed sugar cane. Regular VNR-run trains all stop at Lang Co station for passenger refreshments. Potentially the third restaurant at the station on the outskirts of Danang will be developed. If so, it will be themed in a colonial manner to reflect a different era in Vietnam’s national journey. The plan is that when the Revolution Express arrives at the stations on the route a brass band in army regalia will greet disembarking guests.
