  • A date with slow travel, picturesque villages, & open studios this summer!

Think gorgeous British summer. 140 artists. Open studios and the wilds of the North York Moors. If you want a summer vacation that rewards you with all the benefits of slow travel, and indulges your love for all things art and artsy, we’ve something for you. Stretching from the coast to the moors, dales, and beyond, North Yorkshire’s artistic community invites the public to take a peek inside their studios this summer. The open studio event takes place across the first two weekends of June: 3-4 and 10-11 June, 2023. It offers everyone an exciting opportunity to discover works from emerging and established artists in the region. The open studio event is organised by the artist-run collective, North Yorkshire Open Studios (NYOS), a not-for-profit community that works to support the hundreds of painters, sculptors, print-makers, jewellers, ceramicists, photographers and creatives who live and work in North Yorkshire.  For the first time, NYOS has teamed up with the North York Moors National Park to host a three-month long preview exhibition of this summer’s open studio event at the Inspired by… gallery at Danby Lodge National Park Centre, near Whitby.  The exhibition will showcase some of the artists who will be opening their studios and takes place from 12 February to 21 May 2023, along with special artist talks and demonstrations. During the exhibition, visitors will be able to vote for their favourite two-dimensional and three-dimensional artists as part of an Audience Choice Award, sponsored by the Inspired by… gallery. The two winners will receive £200 towards furthering their art practice. Garth Bayley, Project Manager for NYOS , said: “The open studio event is a chance to go ‘through the keyhole’ of an artist’s studio, appreciate the creative process, and meet and get to know the artist too.” This year, NYOS aims to attract visitors from across the north including Manchester, Newcastle and Leeds.  An art trial map will be available for visitors to plan their trip. Garth said: “With the trend for slow travel and staycations, the art studio trail covers coastal spots in Scarborough, through to scenic National Parks including the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales, and the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, alongside picturesque villages and vibrant market towns. It’s a wonderful opportunity to go on an artistic and cultural magical tour, visit the well-known attractions or explore lesser-known areas and experience this beautiful and diverse region with new eyes.” Artists taking part will highlight attractions near their studios, such as castles, abbeys, beauty spots and visitor attractions to help visitors create itineraries for a full day, or even a weekend getaway break, perfect for culture vultures.” Sally Ann Smith, curator of the Inspired by… gallery at the Danby Lodge National Park Centre , said: “ We are delighted to be involved for the first time and to have the opportunity to exhibit some of the most talented painters, printmakers, sculptors and designers in our region. This is such a fantastic opportunity for artists to showcase their work to new audiences, and for visitors to the Inspired by… gallery to immerse themselves in all the creativity and originality that North Yorkshire has to offer.” All works in the open studio event are for sale. The scheme is supported by the NYOS Patron, the Duchess of Devonshire. The Duchess of Devonshire, said: “ I’m delighted to support this inspiring and supportive platform, which is now in its 16th year. North Yorkshire is home to some of the UK’s most beautiful scenery, and the source of inspiration for generations of artists, including Hockney, Hepworth and Turner. This is an exciting opportunity to discover some incredible talent, as well as champion North Yorkshire as a vibrant place for art. It offers interactive, adventurous experiences as well as the chance to get your hands on some unique artworks.”

  • Island Hopping in Greece- Create a Life you can Fall in Love With

The trick to perfect island-hopping in Greece is to plan a little, but not too much. While accommodation and ferries will need to be booked in advance, the whole spirit of exploring the islands is rooted in spontaneity. The islands are dabbed across the turquoise Aegean and Ionian seas. Over the years different ones have been a la mode, but all of them are unique and beautiful. It’s hard to describe the intoxicating excitement of sailing into the port of a new island when moving from one to the next. My own 4-week adventure took place 20 years ago, but my memories of the islands, the beaches, the food and the architecture are as crystal clear as the Aegean. Every moment of that trip was spectacular, perhaps with the exception of one minor moped accident! Zakynthos In spite of a huge surge in popularity in recent years and becoming a package holiday favourite, there are quiet pockets with isolated coves, serene villages and a mountainous interior. Naviggo, a beach which holds the remains of a freight ship that sunk in the 1980s has become the hippest spot for young travellers. Its Instagram-worthy shores attract thousands of tourists a day by boat as it’s inaccessible by land. Ios Known as a party island since the 1970s, something I’m assured is still very much the case, the island also has something to offer the more chilled-out traveller. Leaning into the wellness market, there is an abundance of spa hotels. A resort hotel named Calilo nails the laid-back ‘good vibes only’ atmosphere. Rising out of, and carved from, the native rock, Calilo is cradled by 1,000 acres of protected land and fringed by six miles of golden sand, lapped by a cerulean sea.  The hotel’s ethos advises you to leave cynicism at the door on arrival and live by the motto ‘Create a life you can fall in love with’. Crete The largest of the Greek islands and the one with the most diverse landscape, Crete, unlike the other islands which rely on tourism, is a working city which can come as a surprise to travellers. Distinctive Venetian influences are apparent in some of the architecture and the island is flanked by the soaring White Mountains. Santorini One of Europe’s most popular destinations, Santori packs a solid punch in the beauty stakes. Though possibly what you might expect from an island borne from an erupted volcano in 1613BC. Sunset in Santorini is an event that can settle into your soul. The skies are blood orange and pink above the glittering water and amongst the chalky white buildings. Find a place to serve some sparkling Greek wine and you are guaranteed to fall in love with your life. At least at that moment.

A new study has revealed the safest places in Europe when it comes to travel. And the results may surprise you. Or they might confirm what your travelling experience has taught you. The study by  Gamblino.com  analysed 9 metrics that contribute towards how safe an area may be such as homicides, assaults, road fatalities, natural disaster risk, and global peace index, to find which European country is the safest. Switzerland ranked on top of the list, followed by Iceland and Norway. Each country was given a score out of 10 for each factor, which was then totalled to provide a score on the safety index. • Have You Had a Taste of Normandy?

Recently, a delegation from Normandy was in Ireland, and the delegation included President of the Normandy Region. It was fascinating to attend the event and know all about what the region offers for tourists. The icing on the cake, so to speak, was to find out about the gorgeous food (and drink) that Normandy is famous for. Have you had a taste of Normandy, so to speak? And if you are planning a Normandy break in 2023, what can you expect to put on your ‘must-have food list’? According to Explore France, Normandy offers an exciting and high-quality gastronomical variety. First comes its luxurious seafood: oysters from the open sea, scallops, lobsters. And for each major town there is most likely a speciality: Dieppe sole, tripe à la mode from Caen, boudin noir from Mortagne. There’s also those great Normandy cows, who give milk in abundance. The famous cheeses of the region—camembert (well made), Pont l’Evêque, or livarot—are thanks to them. And finally, as for fruits, Normandy holds the ace: green, sweet, crunchy, sour, ripe apples. They are used in making cider and the reputed calvados. What about regional specialities in Normandy? Normandy is renowned for its andouillette d’Alençon, marmite dieppoise, mirlitons de Rouen, escalope à la normande, estouffade, rabbit in cider, duckling à la Rouennaise, chicken or omelette vallée d’Auge, mussels à la crème, and tripe à la mode from Caen. Its desserts (the tarte normande, brioche, shortbreads, Isigny caramels, and rice pudding) are also delicious. Did we hear ‘Cheese’? But of course! Normandy is also known for its excellent varieties of cheese. Well known specialty cheeses here are Camembert, Pavé d’Auge, Livarot, Pont l’Evêque, Boursin, Brillat-Savarain, and Brin de Paille. Wines and spirits Calvados, mistelle, cider (AOC designation Pays d’Auge, AOC in process: Cidre du Bessin, Cidre du Cotentin, Cidre du Pays de Caux, and Cidre du Perche) Here’s a list of a few Calvados producers: Père Magloire Charles de Granville Huet Chateau du Breuil Coquerel Boulard Dupont Ferme du Ponctey Interesting, and so tempting, isn’t it? If you do go to Normandy this summer, do let us know please. We would love to hear of your adventures, especially culinary ones.
