La Tomatina – Spain In the small town of Buñol, Spain , the last Wednesday of August transforms into a battleground of squishy, ripe tomatoes. La Tomatina is a festival where participants throw tomatoes at each other, painting the town red in the most literal sense. Baby Jumping Festival (El Colacho) – Spain Spain makes another entry with El Colacho , celebrated in Castrillo de Murcia . Held during the feast of Corpus Christi, this festival involves men dressed as the Devil (known as El Colacho) leaping over rows of babies laid on mattresses in the streets. This bizarre ritual, dating back to 1620, is believed to cleanse the infants of original sin and protect them from evil spirits. 3. As part of St. Patrick’s Festival, 14-17 March 2026, broadcaster, author and proud Irishwoman Vogue Williams is announced as the Grand Marshal for the 2026 National St. Patrick’s Day Parade. One of Ireland’s most recognisable media personalities, Vogue Williams will serve as Grand Marshal for the National Parade through the heart of Dublin on St. Patrick’s Day, Tuesday 17 March, as Ireland’s national festival returns to its roots with a celebration of culture, creativity and community across four days and nights. Born in Dublin, Vogue Williams has built a dynamic career across broadcasting, fashion and entrepreneurship, becoming a familiar face to audiences in Ireland and beyond. Known for her warmth, authenticity and strong connection to home, Vogue has consistently championed Irish creativity and storytelling on a global stage, while maintaining close ties to her roots. She embodies the energy and ambition of a global Ireland, and her journey reflects the lived experience of so many of our people at home and abroad. As we celebrate Roots and Ireland’s one shared story, I know she will lead this year’s Parade with warmth, pride and a great sense of occasion. This year's Grand Marshal, Vogue Williams, is a proud Dubliner and she, along with all the participants in the festival, will help showcase Dublin and Ireland as welcoming, vibrant destinations for visitors during St. Patrick’s Day and throughout the year.” The National St. Patrick’s Day Parade 2026 will form the centrepiece of St. Patrick’s Festival, which takes place across Dublin from 14-17 March. The Parade will feature 12 large-scale floats from independent parade companies, with over 150 artists and 3,000 participants set to take part in a vibrant city-wide programme spanning music, street theatre, dance, comedy, craft and participatory performance. Adding to the festivities, Rotunda Hospital and The Rotunda Foundation will make their first-ever Parade appearance, marking the moment with a special float designed by ArtFX, celebrating one of Dublin’s most historic and iconic institutions and its enduring place at the heart of the city’s story. Driven by the Festival’s core values of community, diversity, joy, prosperity and sustainability, the Parade will follow its established route through the city, showcasing large-scale pageantry, imaginative storytelling and collaborative performance from Ireland’s leading independent creative parade companies, community groups and international marching bands. Under the continued artistic leadership of Artistic Director Aoife Carry , the Parade prioritises craft excellence, meaningful participation, sustainability and accessibility, with a strong emphasis on reuse, upcycling and environmentally responsible production. Building on its Climate Action Plan, the Festival is proud to partner once again with Kia as official vehicle partner for a fifth consecutive year. - Airbnb Announces Winners of its Irish Host Spotlight Awards
Airbnb is proud to reveal Ireland’s top hosts for 2025, including “Best Room Host” , “Most Unique Stay” , “Best Design Stay” , “Best New Host” , and “Community Champion” . The Airbnb Host Spotlight Awards recognise Irish hosts for the outstanding experiences they create for guests and the positive contribution they make to their local communities. Receiving the award for “Most Unique Stay” was Breege from Roveagh, County Galway, for her Luxury Truck Lodge , with its own private pool. Breege’s endeavors to host began by following in her father’s footsteps, as he rented out a lakeside property in her early years. The Truck Lodge started off as a rally truck used for races, until herself and her husband converted it into a luxurious space. Breege aims to make the Truck Lodge memorable for its guests, by adding little touches such as robes and slippers, and treats for special occasions. “Best Room Host” was granted to Aisling from Spanish Point, County Clare, for her listing of a 2-bed, luxury historic home , located within close proximity to many incredible tourist sites that Clare has to offer. Aisling opened up her home in 2024 , as she felt that the fascinating history of the property was too beautiful not to share. With a passion for organising dinners and parties, Airbnb was the perfect opportunity for Aisling to share her love of hosting. “Best Design Stay” was given to Peter and Anna from Fintown, County Donegal, for The Hide - their cosy cabin Airbnb, with stunning views of the Glenveagh National Park. Just fifteen minutes drive from The Wild Atlantic Way, The Hide is ideal for a peaceful retreat, or as a great base for exploring everything that Donegal has to offer. Peter and Anna began listing on Airbnb in 2016, and have resided in a traditional byre and stone cottage for the last eighteen years. Awarded “Best New Host” was Sandy from County Cork for her Dripsey Castle Estate , featuring 8 en-suite bedrooms, a reception hall, drawing room, games room, library, professional kitchen and early 20th century ballroom - all situated across 110 acres of organic pasture and native woodland. Sandy was inspired to open the doors of the estate, as she believes in sharing the unique blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty of the property. The estate operates on renewable energy, using a hydroelectric turbine and wood furnace to ensure that the natural surroundings remain protected for generations to come. The “Community Champion” award was received by Aidan of Ballyharren, County Wexford for his Kilpatrick Glebe family and pet-friendly farm stay. The property is set across 15 acres, and houses modern amenities such as an electric vehicle charger, a barbeque, and shared beach access. Kilpatrick Glebe was built in 1842 as a pastoral home, and since 2020 has been extensively updated. Aidan’s listing contributes to the sustainability of local businesses and tourism, offering trips and puffin packages, seashore exploration, and itineraries of local attractions for guests. Speaking about the awards, Velma Corcoran, Director of Government Relations and Policy Campaigns, Airbnb said: “ We are delighted to celebrate Airbnb hosts across Ireland for their outstanding hospitality and commitment to the hosting community. The time, care and dedication invested in every listing is evident, helping to create memorable and truly authentic experiences for guests. These hosts personify the crucial role that short term rentals play in boosting tourism in rural Ireland.” Winner of the “ Most Unique Stay”, Breege said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to receive the award for Most Unique Stay. The Truck Lodge has truly been a labour of love for both myself and my daughter Ruth, so it means the world to us to see it recognised in this way. Hospitality has always been part of my life. I grew up watching my grandmother run her very own fishing lodge many years ago. She taught me that the small details and warm welcomes are what people remember most. We have always wanted to create a luxury retreat for our guests, especially in the unique setting of a truck! From all the little touches to celebrating big occasions, we want to make every stay feel memorable for our guests.” Hosts and short-term letting platforms such as Airbnb remain crucial to the rural tourism sector in Ireland, with the Host Spotlight Awards allowing those who operate and promote tourism in these areas the chance to showcase their dedication to their communities. According to a study by Digital Tourism Think Tank and Airbnb , nights spent in rural accommodation surged 88% between 2019 and 2024, demonstrating sustained visitor demand to explore areas off the beaten track. - Forest Bathing, Crafted Cocktails, Hot Tubs: a luxury woodland wellness escape!
Cab ü by the Lakes is an enchanting lake side retreat for all: from a solo traveller, family or group of friends. There is something for everyone. Set with Killykeen Forest in Co. Cavan this magical place offers "Wild Luxury, in it's most natural form" and (believe me!) it delivers just this. We were lucky enough to be invited down to Cab ü by the Lakes to see their new 15 Cabins launching in March and whilst there we got to experience what it's like to stay there and sample all that was on offer. As soon as we checked in and had made ourselves familiar with our surrounding, it was first things first: a visit to the hot tub and sauna . We booked our slot and made our way to the Nature Spa. We checked in at the Cab ü Corner, where we were given a fabulous list of cocktails we could enjoy during our hot tub experience. From there, we were shown to the changing rooms and provided with robes and towels. Once in the hot tub we were served our spritz, and all that was left to do was unwind and immerse ourselves to the sounds of the surrounding forest, pure bliss. After the hot tub and sauna, we thought what better way to explore our new surroundings than to hire some bicycles. We set off on the trail and took in all the beauty of the forest and lakes. We cycled down to the Jetty, from where you can take a boat out or "glide across the lake in a kayak". That evening, we met up at the Sitooterie, a standout feature of Cab ü by the Lakes . The Sitooterie offers a communal space perfect for relaxing and socialising. Its design is as you would expect: true to the signature of Cab ü - a woodland luxury. We ordered cocktails, I was recommended their maple margarita and it didn't disappoint! We relaxed there for a time whilst we all had a catch up on our day seated by the open fire. The next morning after breakfast, we checked in again at Cab ü Corner but this time it was to experience the treatments at the Nature Spa. Treatments at the Nature Spa include deep tissue massage, signature facials and Desse Photography Masks. I choose a deep tissue massage and it did not disappoint, I was greeted by the wonderful Belen and she went thought the treatment with me, I was then escorted to the treatment room and began my massage. It was fantastic! Whether is a was a combination of the setting, Belen, the treatment room or all 3, it was one of the best massages I have ever had. Sophie opted for a deep cleansing Aloe Vera Scrub Facial. Belen went through a skin analysis with Sophie and recommended the best facial for her skin. The Deep Cleansing Aloe Vera Scrub Facial was cleansing and cooling. She then finished off the facial with a neck and arm massage. Afterwards, we grabbed a coffee and Pastry from Cab ü Corner and sat in the Sitooterie whilst we mapped out our journey home. Reluctantly, we had to check out, safe in the knowledge that it wouldn't be long till we return again: the lure of the new cabins is drawing me back in already... From March, 15 new cabins with the spectacular 3 bedroom Barnhouse features a Super king en suite master, an open plan kitchen space with floor to ceiling windows creating a light and airy living space. But the highlight for me is you have your own hot tub on your terrace, Bliss. A Two - night stays start from €570 in a woodland Cabins and from €995 in the Barnhouse with Hot Tub, subject to season and availability. - Two Icons : Giulietta of Verona and Molly Malone of Dublin
Two iconic female figures whose stories continue to attract travellers from around the world. Some figures transcend history to become true symbols of culture and tradition. Juliet in Verona and Molly Malone in Dublin are among the most recognisable female icons associated with their cities, attracting visitors from all over the world. In Verona, visitors flock to Giulietta's House, now a museum recounting the famous story of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The place is particularly famous for its iconic balcony and its bronze statue of Juliet, the tragic heroine of the play. Although she is a fictional character, she has become a universal symbol of romantic love and the city of Verona. In Dublin, Molly Malone embodies Irish traditions and local identity. Immortalised by the famous song telling the story of a young fishmonger who roamed the streets of the city and died young from fever, Molly has become an iconic symbol and one of the most visited sites in the Irish capital, despite the fact that her historical existence is still debated. This song has even become the city's unofficial anthem However, Juliette and Molly Malone are not as different as one might think. Both are products of cultural narratives. And both have become iconic representations of their cities and must-see attractions for visitors. Another remarkable similarity lies in the rituals associated with their statues. Visitors traditionally touch the breasts of both figures in the hope of attracting good luck or love. However, this practice is now increasingly being questioned, sparking discussions about respect, representation and the evolution of cultural traditions. In Dublin, the statue of Molly Malone has been surrounded by flower beds to discourage this behaviour. Today, Juliet and Molly Malone continue to bring travellers together around their stories. Whether in the romantic alleys of Verona or in the heart of Dublin, these figures remind us that travel is not just about historical sites, but also about the traditions and stories that shape the identity of a destination

- 5 Famous Monuments Built for Love
Nowadays, at most, we receive a bouquet of flowers as a proof of love… Back then, some people went as far as building spectacular monuments for the chosen one of their heart! Where is my castle?… The Temple of Nefertari (Egypt) Ramesses II was not one for subtlety when it came to showing his love for Nefertari. He had a temple built next to his own at Abu Simbel, dedicated to the goddess Hathor and to the one who shared both his reign and his heart. To demonstrate his devotion, Ramesses ordered statues of the queen to be sculpted at the same size as his own, an extremely rare honor in ancient Egypt, where women were usually depicted much smaller than men. He also had a beautiful inscription carved at the entrance, “for the one for whom the sun rises,” a testament to the admiration he held for her. Beautiful! The Petit Trianon (France – Versailles) At the heart of the Versailles estate, the Petit Trianon represents a more intimate form of love. Louis XV had it built for his mistress Madame de Pompadour, who sadly died before seeing it completed. It was later gifted by Louis XVI to Marie Antoinette, the last Queen of France, upon his accession to the throne. A touching gesture of love, showing that she was truly at home there. She spent much time in this retreat, enjoying moments away from court life and continuously enhancing the estate over the years. Today, this small château remains the symbol of a freedom offered by a king to his queen. Boldt Castle (United States – New York) As a testament to his love, millionaire George Boldt wanted to offer his wife Louise a castle (nothing less) on Heart Island. Sadly, Louise died suddenly just months before construction was completed… Devastated, George immediately halted the work and never returned to the island. This fairy-tale castle remained frozen in time for decades, becoming the vestige of an unfinished happiness. Since then, millions have been invested in restoring and rehabilitating the site. (This story broke my heart…) Kylemore Abbey (Ireland) Nestled in the wild landscape of Connemara, Kylemore Abbey was originally a castle built by Mitchell Henry, a wealthy merchant, for his wife Margaret. After a honeymoon during which they fell in love with the region, he decided to offer her the home of her dreams overlooking the lake. However, Margaret died suddenly from a severe illness not long after… Mitchell then built a miniature neo-Gothic church on the estate in her memory, turning the site into a sanctuary of peace and melancholy. Taj Mahal, India How could we overlook the ultimate symbol of love? Mughal emperor Shah Jahan had this white marble monument built in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. After her death while giving birth to their fourteenth child (fourteenth?!), he decided to offer her the most beautiful mausoleum in the world so she would never be forgotten. More than 22,000 workers and artisans labored for over 20 years. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it stands as a masterpiece born from grief transformed into eternal art. And here we are, not even getting a marble bathroom… We can agree: after reading all this, the supermarket bouquet or the Valentine’s Day box of chocolates lose a bit of their charm. But what truly matters is that behind these architectural wonders lie deeply human stories, shaped by passion, loss, and memory
